Sculpture FAQ

What are Maquettes?

Before starting an elaborate sculpture project, several forms of study are done. Sketches, layouts, and armature design are all important. The fastest and most beneficial form is the maquette. These are small sculptures created by assembling objects, wax, clay, whatever works to get the piece into 3D form to match the artist's vision. Often, several versions are done as the design matures.

The maquettes created by Tj for the Nike series were created from molding parts of toys, applying and altering wax, sometimes using clay or plaster. He has hand-tooled all of them, and often painted or stained them to view the details and continue the detailing process. He photographs the maquettes and places them in situ for studying base designs and sculpture installations. They are models used for reference again and again as larger versions of the works are developed.

These little tools are the first time the artist works the three dimensional form.
While constructing the maquettes, he discovers many problems  and he contemplates the process for creating the larger work.

Collector FAQ

How do I commission work?

It is easier than you think to commission a piece of sculpture for a momentous occasion or to commemorate an individual, event or concept. With today's rapid communication, much of the study interviewing and preparation can be done via digital media over long distances. We can discuss styles, sites materials, methods and build an outline for a project that suites you perfectly. Contact Tj for more details.

What about Maquette Editions?

Every year only a lucky few collectors will be able to acquire one of these maquettes. The number to be sold has been set in advance of the studio casting process. Patrons of this art can reserve a piece from the annual cast, but once these are sold, no more pieces will be done until next year's cast.
The works are shipped with a provenance certificate documenting the edition signed by the artist.
When an entire edition is sold out you can be added to a waiting list for notification of the next casting.
Collectors do trade in limited edition items. If there are early buyers willing to part with their maquette we can put you in touch with them, but they will want a premium for their investment.
